Course Details:

The overall intention of this course is to prepare participants for the task of teaching English to people whose native language is not English. Those enrolling in the course need no previous teaching experience or qualifications. However, those who do will be more likely to have a higher skill level on completion of the course. Consequently, the variety of potential employment opportunities for course graduates may depend on the participants pre-existing qualifications and experience. This course is offered in the evening and enrolments will be considered from both current students and the general public.

Prerequisite – high pass in HSC English or evidence of similar ability in English

Content – 12 core units + 1 elective

Core units: Language, Culture and Learning, Analysing Language, Teaching Speaking, Teaching Listening, Teaching Reading, Teaching Writing, Teaching Grammar, Teaching Spelling and Pronunciation, Planning Syllabuses and Lessons, Assessing ESL Learners, Managing Classroom Logistics and Developing Resource Files.

Electives: Select and apply appropriate TESOL methodologies, Teaching English for Academic Purposes, Teach ESL to Early Childhood Learners, TESOL with Primary School Aged Children, Teaching ESL to Teenage Learners, Use Music, Art and Drama in TESOL, Facilitate Experiential Learning Programs, Facilitate Individual Learning Programs, Work with Volunteers, Setting up Community Based English Classes and Using Computers in TESOL.

What you have to do

  • Participate in classroom discussions
  • Prepare and deliver activities to classmates
  • Complete written reflections based on the material in the manual
  • Plan a minimum of 4 lessons, prepare resources , deliver those lessons and evaluate them
  • Develop assessment tools, assess student competence, record results and evaluate the process
  • Develop a resource file
  • Complete elective specific tasks

Practical component – 14 hours observation of an experienced TESOL teacher plus 6 hours teaching specified lessons

In class training – Tuesday & Wednesday nights,  6.00 -8.00 pm during Semester 1, starting 1st March 2011.
Electives & finishing off from Week 8 Semester 2.
Everything must be completed by November 2011

What this Qualification Allows You To Do

OUTCOME A
No previous teaching experience

  • Teach groups of visiting students on short term study tours
  • Teach small groups of migrants in a supervised and limited capacity for the development of general English skills
  • Teach overseas students on an individual or small group tutorial basis
  • Teach overseas in institutions not governed  by Australian standards where predominantly conversational English is required

OUTCOME B
For experienced or qualified participants

Experienced or qualified participants who already have a Tertiary Level degree and then also complete the Certificate IV in TESOL will find a wider range of employment opportunities.

 For example, in Australia, the combination of a University Degree and the Cert IV in TESOL would be sufficient for teaching English at a National ELT (English Language Teaching) Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) accredited training centre (see www.neas.org.au/teachers/elt.php)

 Potential Course participants should research the requirements for whatever Country, and particular employment opportunities that may apply

  • Teach English as a Second or Foreign Language in a professional capacity within Australia
